Body worn cameras and digital evidence management: Queensland Police Experience

Wednesday 7 June: Noon-12.30pm
Acting Inspector Wayne Hutchings / Body Worn Camera Project Organisational Capability Command, Queensland Police Service

The Queensland Police Service recently undertook an extensive procurement and evaluation process to select an end-to-end solution for body worn cameras and an integrated digital evidence management system.  In July 2016 the Service embarked on a large-scale rollout, delivering 2700 body worn cameras to 26 police stations, 13 tactical crime units and 41 road policing units throughout Queensland.  This was the largest rollout of body worn cameras to any law enforcement agency in Australia, and the 4th largest in the world.

With the broad availability of body worn cameras to officers, the Service is now starting to further leverage this capability.  For example, the use of body worn cameras has been integral to evidence gathering and presentation on the Gold Coast as part of a domestic violence related ‘accelerated evidence’ trial.

Inspector Hutchings will present an overview of the Queensland Police Service rollout of body worn cameras including an exploration of their use in the accelerated evidence trial.
